Dealradar Offers Coupon-Clutter Fix

Dealradar is also working with traditional-media companies or their offspring, such as Metromix, owned primarily by Gannett Co., to help them create their own daily-deal sites, Mr. Hess said.

BATAVIA, Ohio (AdAge.com) -- As Google Offers prepares to do battle with Groupon and Amazon's Living Social, one player could really clean up: Dealradar.com, a Chicago-based startup, aims to help frugal consumers clear the clutter from their email boxes by consolidating ever-proliferating offers from major coupon sites plus dozens of lesser players in one daily message.

Dealradar, launched last year and headed by Dan Hess, a veteran of ComScore, Information Resources Inc. (now SymphonyIRI) and Tribune Interactive, now operates in 70 U.S. cities along with 17 more in Canada, the U.K. and Australia.

If you text while working, are you really working?

@SethGodin said:

"Yes, you shouldn't text while driving, or talk on the cell phone, or argue with your dog or drive blindfolded. It's an idiot move, one that often leads to death (yours or someone else's).

"I don't think you should text while working, either. Or use social networking software of any kind for that matter. And you probably shouldn't eat crunchy chips, either."

I'll add:

I get online several times a day to engage readers in social media. I may not reach the millions that Seth does, but I know that things happen because I stay in touch.

So my first gut reaction would be to think it's just another rant from someone blessed with an old media audience... but after thinking about this one for a few minutes, I remembered how often I find myself thinking "I'll just log in to send one tweet" and find myself engaged when it's not my top priority.

So far, I've not found any limit to the value of engagement... I have found some limits to my ability to focus.

Seth is right. If your "work" does not include engaging customers.. do it without the browser open. In fact, turn off the phone, close the door, and FOCUS.

What do you do to get focused time for a project?

Visualization of an Internet Shutdown in Egypt. What does it mean?

While there is no doubt that a conflict is happening in #Egypt, I haven't been able to form a sensible opinion on the issues.

What I know

1) A lot of people don't like the current government

2) Violence is happening

3) The government reacted by shutting down communications

Here's my big question. Is the intent to hide from the world, or cut off communication between the rebels?

The effectiveness of the action is questionable either way.

I so much want to be saying "bad or dumb move to shut down communications" and comment in favor of any group fighting for change.

But would it be irresponsible for me to do so?

Supposing there is some change. I assume it would be positive. But what do I know? Would the new government be better?

I don't have a clue.

"Is Netwoking Mandatory for Making It?" via @hollischapman

Twitter’s Ad Revenue May Triple to $150 Million

Like Facebook and Google before it, Twitter has thousands of marketers chomping at the bit to find a ad strategy.

They are smart to eschew old models and launch programs that use the unique power of Twitter. Early testers tell me the "Promoted Tweets" are exceeding expectations and many of us are anxiously awaiting a user model where we can experiment with small budgets ourselves.

If you hate ads, you know why it will take a new model. If you are selling anything online, watch this space. It is going to make these early number look puny.

Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Twitter Inc. will probably more than triple its advertising revenue to $150 million this year as more companies use it to spread marketing messages, according to Internet researcher EMarketer Inc.

Ad sales for Twitter, which introduced its advertising program in April, may reach $250 million in 2012, said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at EMarketer, which today released its first multiyear research report on the blogging site. San Francisco-based Twitter has lured advertisers such as Nissan Motor Co., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Starbucks Corp.

Twitter, which has more than 175 million registered users globally, is competing for advertising dollars with larger companies such as Google Inc. and social-networking rival Facebook Inc. The company will need to boost its user base while demonstrating that ads posted on its pages are effective, Williamson said. A December Pew Research Center report said only 8 percent of U.S. Web surfers use Twitter, she noted.

How to Use Facebook Tags Without Being Annoying

I love to share, show appreciation and get a discussion going, so I try to answer anyone who reaches out to me through any medium.

You can get my attention by putting addressing a question to me, or including me in a relevant conversation.

It's parties. You want to talk to someone, so you get their attention and talk.

But if you go into a room and yell "LOOK AT ME" you are annoying.

@MariSmith shared some tips to use tagging on Facebook

Amplify’d from www.marismith.com
Facebook @ tagging
Do use @ tagging:

  • To acknowledge and give credit.

  • To provide attribution for content you share.

  • To show appreciation.

  • To help promote other fan pages.

  • To cross-reference other fan pages, assuming there is no conflict of interests.

  • To @ tag your own page strategically (e.g. by way of a signature when making wall posts).

Do not use @ tagging:

  • As a way to “poach” fans from other pages that offer the same/similar service as you do to the same/similar target audience.

  • As a way to post your own affiliate link on the wall of the affiliate program owner’s fan page.

  • As a way to get someone’s attention for self-serving reasons.

  • As a way to “imply endorsement” by that person/page.

Are we asking the right question about Quora?

The bandwagon continues to grow with more posts from pundits claiming Quora is the next big thing.

I find it to be cool technology deployment. Since we all have questions that we want answers to, the connections and sorting are certainly working.

I've learned not to judge the viablity of a new site based on people telling me that they don't have time to join yet another network.. so while I personally feel like all I do on Quora is answer friend requests, I like to remember how often someone asks me if Twitter is going to survive "because we just don't have time for that"

Suppose Quora were there.. with your connections in place from other networks and some default setting that took care of the chores of setting it up.. would you go there when you have a question?

Amplify’d from blog.holtz.com

imageI have been watching Quora for a while now—both the site and the discussion swirling around it—for long enough to be convinced that the Q-and-A service will probably become an established social channel that should thrive and grow.

Quora has attracted a lot of attention in the last few weeks based largely on the flood of people joining and the volume of Quora-generated content being shared through other services, mostly Twitter. Robert Scoble is responsible for a good chunk of the attention, having blogged that Quora is the future of blogging.
